How we ASPIRE with our Healthy Living

At St Stephen’s we believe that staying healthy is just as important as learning in the classroom. There is a clear focus on developing our children's awareness of healthy lifestyles for them to live long and healthy lives. We aim to work together in partnership with families to ensure healthy living is a shared message between school and home. Healthy lifestyles including the foods we eat, exercise, oral health and sleep.

A-whole school curriculum with high expectations and excellence delivered rigorously through well sequenced subjects, progression in generative knowledge, rich vocabulary, concepts and skills
Healthy living is taught through a well-sequenced approach using our Jigsaw PSHE curriculum, which focusses on helping pupils build knowledge of nutrition, fitness, mental health, and well-being step by step. With high expectations for all, children develop rich vocabulary and key concepts that empower them to make positive, informed choices about their health.

S-timulating enquiring minds by providing rich and relevant experiences, purposeful and connected learning, and creative thinking
Healthy living inspires curiosity through practical, purposeful experiences such as cooking, gardening, sports, and science. These activities allow pupils to ask questions, think critically, and make meaningful connections between what they learn in school and the choices they make in everyday life.

P-lacing nurturing, lifelong learning behaviours – resilience, risk taking, independence, perseverance, and pride in success - at the heart of our curriculum
Healthy living provides opportunities to nurture resilience, perseverance, independence, and pride in success. Whether learning a new sport, trying unfamiliar foods, or managing challenges, pupils build confidence in their ability to make healthy choices that will support them throughout life.

I - Inclusivity and flexibility which allows us to cater for individual needs, abilities and interests.
We recognise that every child’s needs are different, so our approach to healthy living ensures all pupils can take part, thrive, and achieve success. Activities are adapted to reflect individual interests, abilities, and cultural backgrounds, encouraging inclusivity while celebrating diversity.

R-evisiting key knowledge, skills and vocab, so pupils know more and remember more
Important health concepts such as balanced eating, the benefits of exercise, good sleep, and emotional well-being are revisited regularly across the curriculum. This ensures pupils remember, apply, and deepen their understanding, making healthy living part of their everyday habits.

E - Encompassing the whole child- developing their faith, values, spirituality, health and well-being and understanding the world we live in, their future in our culturally diverse community and country where equality and tolerance is promoted.
Healthy living contributes to the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual development of every pupil. It supports well-being, builds strong values, and encourages respect for themselves and others. Children also learn to appreciate their role in a diverse, tolerant community, preparing them for a healthy, positive future.
